Fishing for Gold

Q: Why Do fish gulp more in warm water than cold water.
A: When the water is warmer, a fish's body is more active and it needs more oxygen. It's not much different than when you're running or very active and need more oxygen too - that's when you breathe more quickly. Goldfish, and some other kinds of fish, are able to gulp air at the surface to increase their oxygen consumption.
Often, when goldfish are crowded in their aquarium, they need to get more oxygen than the water can supply so go to the surface to gulp air. If this is happening to your fish, you may want to increase the size of their aquarium, provide an air pump, or reduce the number of fish in that tank.
