Q: I found this spider along the roadside in northern central Arkansas. I think it's a male because it is smaller than a female I had few yrs ago. I do not know it's species. Please identify. Pix enclosed. Thanks.
State: Arkansas
Habitat: field/meadow

A: You're probably correct on the sex of this spider if you had a larger female before. This does look like a tarantula and is probably the Texas Brown Tarantula (Aphonopelm hentz). Check out this web site for more info on how to tell male from female: www.scsc.k12.ar.us
