What kind of frog is this?

Q: This morning on my front porch (sitting on the edge of my blue bin) was this bright green frog.

It was such a surprise because I've never seen any like that around my house. It was actually quite small even though it looks big in the picture. Would this be a considered a Tree Frog or something else?

Thanks!

A: Well first off, your photos are great - very helpful!!

Your little guy is a Gray Treefrog (Hyla versicolor or Hyla chrysoscelis - extremely difficult to tell them apart). Although the name says "gray" they can be green too, depending on various factors. These treefrogs live in shrubs and trees in moist wooded areas and blend in so well with bark and lichens that they're rarely seen. You've probably heard these little guys but didn't realize what it was you were hearing. In the spring they do come to shallow water areas to breed but usually stay aloft. If you had a light on outside last night, he may have been attracted to your porch by the insects. Keep an eye out and you may see him again tonight.

Thanks for sharing.
