Unusual Spider in Cape Coral

Posted by Jack Proebstle on August 14, 2008

Q: Can you identify this beautiful spider? It is approximately 1/2" wide and can move very fast. The spider was found about 7pm, still daylight, hanging from our lanai. It had a web spun that was less than 1 foot in diameter.

State: Florida

Habitat: suburban/yard

A: Thanks for you photos - very helpful! Your spider is the Spinybacked Orbweaver (Gasteracantha cancriformis) - often called the Crab Spider in Florida. You can find out more about this interesting animal at: creatures.ifas.ufl.edu

Thanks for asking.
