What kind of spider is this?

Q: I took a picture of the spider below in my backyard. Being from New York I was surprised to see one so large (normally they are much smaller up north). Any ideas on what it is?
State: New York
Habitat: suburban/yard

A: Nice photo Dan - thanks! Your spider is a common one called a Black and Yellow Argiope (Argiope aurantia). Females are much larger than the males and as the summer progresses, theyre more obvious as they get rather large and are more obvious This is an orb-making spider that is harmless to people and pets so no problem there. You might want to check it out on the web to find out more details about it.
Hope this helps and thanks for sharing.
