tiny snake

Q: I live near Ft Lauderdale, Florida, and found what appears to be the smallest, very dark brown reptile on the tile floor, next to the tub. It is only 3 inches long and very thin, so I'm not even sure it is a snake although it moves side to side and can raise it's head. I can not visably see eyes or a mouth and there are no other color markings. I've gone through the list and photos of snakes in my area but without luck.

State: Florida

A: You figured out this was a snake, but it doesn't look like most other snakes most of us are familiar with. Your mystery snake is a Brahminy Blind Snake (Ramphotyphlops braminus). This is an introduced animal that is believed to have come into the US via potted plants. It burrows in the soil and eats lots of termites and other small insects. This snake is totally harmless so no problem with you or pets. You might want to check this site out for more info on this interesting animal. Go to www.oplin.lib.oh.us

Thanks for asking.
