Galls
Posted by Becky Griffith on May 7, 2008
Q: Hello,
I am a teacher of the fourth grade as well as kindergarten science. When investigating the world of insects, it is difficult for the children to imagine how an insect "creates" a gall. Ideally, I would like to investigate a gall first hand. Unfortunately, it is difficult to locate galls. Therefore, here is my question, is there anywhere that one can order galls?
Sincerely and thank you,

A: Your students are really lucky to have you as their teacher, Becky! Galls can really be interesting and are a nice way to have children begin looking closely at nature. I don't know of any gall sources for ordering but I'll bet if you take a look around your area, you'll find all kinds of galls. I live in central New York State and we have lots and lots of galls on the trees, shrubs and flowering plants in our area. Take a look in any areas that have trees and bushes where you can see the leaves easily and you should be able to find galls on their leaves. Keep in mind that all galls don't look the same! Different kinds of gall-makers use different species so what you find on one kind of tree leaf, for example, may not be found on any other kind of different plant. Many galls are quite small so if you can use a hand lens or magnifying glass for students to get a good look at them, all the better. Good luck to you and thanks so much for asking.
