Bird Egg
Posted by Beth Meyer on October 6, 2007
Q: I found a nest in my garage with 2 eggs in it. They are about the size of a dime, creamy white in color with mostly brown speckles and a few blue/gray speckles mixed in. Any thoughts on what they might be?

A: I'll do my best but wish you had given me some info on the nest construction too. Eggs can look an awful lot alike so I'm going to have to really stretch on this one. From the bit of information you gave me, and geographic location, I'm leaning heavily toward the Carolina Wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus). This is a reasonably common bird, it has often used buildings for nest locations but then finds some kind of cavity there to build its nest. Not sure whether the nest you found is active or not (were the eggs warm to the touch?) but these wrens do nest as many as 3 times in the southern part of their range and the egg description fits rather well. Why not google this bird and see if photos look similar to any birds that are hanging around your garage. Hope this helps you out and thanks for writing.
