Please help me identify this snake!

Q: Hello,

I saw this snake from my breakfast room window yesterday. The snake was in my yard right next to my son's toys. I am very afraid of snakes and have a small son who is very inquisitive. Could you please let me know the species of this snake and if it is poisonous?

A: Right off the bat, let me say this is a non-poisonous snake. In fact, it's a real ally! Your visitor was a Gray Rat Snake (Elaphe obsoleta) often called the Oak Snake in the South. This species can grow quite large, up to 72 inches long, and is an especially good mouser. If you have this snake in your neighborhood, you'll have fewer rodents to contend with - your family and pets are safe. I certainly understand your discomfort with snakes, many people are, but this might be a good opportunity to share some information about this animal with your son. Always good to leave wild animals alone but also good to understand their needs and respect their right to life. You might want to check out this website for more info on your animal at: www.flmnh.ufl.edu

Thanks for asking.
