snakes in my house and yard

Q: We've seen two similar (or maybe it's the same one seen twice) snakes, once in our kitchen, once in our back yard. We didn't see the whole thing, but it's at least two feet long, light grey in color, with small black vertical flecks all over the part of the body we saw. It moved very fast to hide when it saw us. Do you have any idea what it might be and whether it's dangerous? We live in Philadelphia.

A: The chances that your snake is dangerous are extremely remote. Really need more info on the snake to help with an ID however. Take a look at this website and check out the photos of the various Pennsylvania common snakes. Your snake is probably one of these: www.koolpages.com
Snakes really are an important part of a healthy environment so hope you can live with this guy - although maybe not in your kitchen. Best of luck.
