Baby snake found in our house
Posted by Chris Merton on September 9, 2007
Q: We found in our house this morning an 7" baby snake that has red/maroonish, grey/white colors and it has black outlines around the red. It is definitely a striker and at one point the end of its tail was shaking.
We live in NJ in the woods on top of a hill. Not much water around and clay like soils.
I can send pictures too.

A: This is a young Eastern Milk Snake — a harmless species of king snake. They primarily eat rodents and are a great thing to have around your house (although you might not want them IN the house!)
Many snakes do the tail-rattling thing as a form of self defense, in order to trick you into thinking they are poisonous.
Young snakes often wander indoors by mistake, especially in the fall, perhaps as they are wandering in search of a place to hibernate. I recommend you release it outside nearby.
Hope this helps.
