Bird Egg Identification Assistance
Posted by Stephan Frye on August 13, 2007
Q: I came across a small bird egg about a month ago on the side of the road. It's about the size of a dime and is light blue/tealish color with dark, almost black spots, with most of the spots on the larger end of the egg. I'm thinking it some sort of sparrow egg but just not sure. I have a picture if that will help.
Thanks,
-Stephan

A: Thanks for the photo and the size comparison inclusion - very important! I'm not an egg expert so had to do some checking around but I think I may have a possibility for your egg. Your initial thought that it's a sparrow sounds good to me. I wish you had included the habitat where you found the egg as that is a very important clue - sparrows are often found in specific habitats. From the egg size and color , however, I'd say your egg is from a Chipping Sparrow - at least that's one of our more common species and fits with the specifics you've give me. Hope this helps. Thanks for asking.
