killer squirrel

Q: The other day I observed one of our young resident squirels pluck a sparrow from a large bird feeder by our window, and promptly start chewing on it. I immediately yelled. The squirel dropped it, but it was too late. I was horrified. Is it common for squirels to attack and kill birds?

A: Squirrels are known to take eggs and even nestlings if/when they can but I've never heard of one taking an adult bird. I'm wondering whether the bird was especially young or maybe even sick - most birds quickly move away from squirrels. Very interesting behavior and I'm glad you shared.
