Unidentified Larvae

Q: My granddaughter in Brandon Manitoba found some larvae in their rain gutter which I could not identify

Can you let me know what it is.

A: Thank you so much for the photos, just what I needed. You are correct that this is a larva, it's the larva of a Syrphid Fly (Hover Fly) called a Rat-tailed Maggot.What looks like a tail is actually a breathing tube for the larva as it lives in water. Our June 25 unit discusses these flies so you might want to check them out.
