red caterpillar

Q: We were camping at Mohican State park and found a red or dark pink caterpillar. It was on a path next to a field by a stream. It did not have any spines. Do you have any idea what type it was? I do have a photo. It was a beautiful color! Thanks! Alisa

A: You did indeed find a caterpillar but it looks to me that it is one that is in its pupal stage. I'll bet this animal had no discernible head or legs, did it? This is the dormant stage a butterfly/moth passes through before it emerges as an adult. At this point there's no way to know exactly what species it is but if you brought it home, you can wait until it emerges. If so, take a photo of the adult and send to me again and I'll see what I can do.

Thanks for sharing.
