What is this snake?

Posted by William Ganis on July 13, 2007

Q: My wife found this snake in a small waste basket in our garage. Its about 12 inches long. It apparently climbed up two stacked milk cartons that was beside it and fell over into the can, then could not get out. It almost gave her a heart attack. Location is central maryland bewteen Wash. D.C. and Baltimore.

thanks,

P.s. I turned it loose into the woods with a stern warning to not come back.

A: Your "visitor" was an Eastern Hognose Snake (Heterodon platirhinos). This is a totally harmless snake that feeds regularly on toads. Hognose snakes are interesting animals and may hiss or fein death if threatened but are not at all dangerous.

So glad you released this animal and didn't kill it. Thanks for asking.
