barn swallow

Q: The barn swallow is nesting and feeding her young in the nest THEY built in an awning over a small entry stoop. However, we noticed there is more than one swallow attending to the nest. Even before the eggs hatched, there was a "babysitter". Is this normal?

A: You're very fortunate to have this taking place at your home, especially in a location where they can be watched. Yes, Barn Swallows often do have a helper(s) at the nest. These helpers are either yearlings or young of this year from the first clutch. You should be seeing at least 3 birds since the male does also help with feeding chores. Enjoy and thanks for asking.
