moving a nesting mallard

Posted by teresa dappolonia on June 19, 2007

Q: We have a nesting mallard and about 10 eggs, right outside our garage door in a tiny pile of mulch. It's in a very dangerous location with many cars, curious children, and several dogs and cats. Also, in the direct sunlight. Is it safe to relocate them somewhere safer? We were hoping to put them under the deck away from harm, but are afraid if we do so the mother will abandon her eggs. She just began her incubation yesterday and I don't believe they'll survive there another 28 or so days. Please help!

A: Your caution is merited - DO NOT MOVE THE NEST!

Although the nest may seem especially vulnerable, it's out of your hands. Do your best to keep animals and kids away from the area and hope all will go well. If you try to move the nest, I can almost guarantee the duck will abandon the nest. I'm afraid you're stuck with the current location.

Best of luck to you and your Mallard.
