Snake in the Backyard

Q: I don't think this is a rattlesnake, but it is larger than the garter snakes I've run into before. Our house backs up to a canyon in San Diego (arid with some trees). Neighbors say there are definitely rattlers in the canyo. Also we have a large yellow lab (105lbs). Is this snake going to be an issue for him? Are these sorts of snakes likely to crawl into the living room if I leave a door open?

A: There are many different kinds of snakes that grow larger than a Garter Snake and are not poisonous. I know people get a bit freaked out when they see a large snake, but these animals are an important part of the environment and will help to keep rodent populations in check. I suppose there is a chance that a snake might get into your home, and although unlikely, you can just get a broom and sweep it out.

Cats and dogs are surprisingly savy about snakes and steer clear of them in most cases - I've never heard of a dog being bitten. So, I don't think you need to be concerned about your lab.

I'd like to suggest that you get a field guide to reptiles of your area and you can try and identify that snake you saw. Once you know some of these snakes, they won't seem so threatening and you can help neighbors who see every snake as poisonous. Hope this helps you out. Thanks for writing.
