Fish

Q: I am trying to identify some fish that live in the ditch ( small canal) behind my house. They resemble a high fin molly but are a pale color with orange noses/faces and have blue almost turquoise tails. Can you tell me what they are?

Thanks so much.

Michele

State: Florida

Habitat: swamp

A: From your description, it sounds exactly like a Sailfin Molly to me. Keep in mind that pet store mollies are often highly bred for various colors and patterns so may not look exactly like the wild forms. Florida has lots of these wild mollies in the right kind of habitats (swampy, shallow waters). Take a look at this site to see what some of the wild ones look like at:www.flmnh.ufl.edu

Hope this helps. Mollies are certainly beautiful fish! Thanks for asking.
