Q: Can horses throw up if they are sick?

A: I spoke with a vet that specializes in horses and he said they are NOT able to regurgitate once food has entered their stomach. If they have something in their esophagus they can cough that up but not once it enters the stomach. He also mentioned that horses are much more careful about what they eat, as opposed to a cow; they chew their food better and are less likely to ingest anything they shouldn't be eating. Cows and deer are ruminants which means they chew their food a second time so they must be able to regurgitate food to accomplish this. Horse are NOT ruminants.
