Hang On Baby

Q: I just noticed our crayfish hatched eggs. We bought it from a pet store 7 months ago. How long does it take for the female to lay the eggs?
A: It doesn't take long for her to lay her eggs, I think she can do so within an hour or less. Now that you have babies, be sure that there is some food they can reach. If this is a North American crayfish, I'd try to get some rocks from a local creek/lake that have algae growing on them. This will allow the babies to eat both plant and animal material (there will be tiny organisms in the algae) and also give them a place to hide if they need to. Just be sure you don't overfeed such that the water becomes polluted. Best of luck with your new charges. Oh, one more thing - if you decide you're no longer interested in your crayfish, be sure NOT to release it in local waters.
