Found and nest with one pink egg
Posted by Vicki Hargis on April 29, 2007
Q: My son left his tennis shoes on the front porch. I placed them on top of an old milk can. I noticed the other day a bird had built a next in one of them. Today I found 1 small pink egg inside. What kind of bird can this be? I have seen all kinds at my bird feeders. Some I know and some I don't. I would appreciate your help in solving this mystery. Thank you

A: Lucky you - this sounds like a classic "unusual nest" made by the Carolina Wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus. This bird's eggs are often pinkish but also usually have blotches on them too. This is a small, reddish-brown bird that is probably singing a lot right now in your yard. Try googling this bird and see if you've seen it around. Hope this solves your mystery. Keep your distance from the nest, incubation takes 12-14 days and then you can watch the parents feed the young - should be fun for the whole family.
