duck eggs
Posted by Kay Bostwick on April 25, 2007
Q: I have a nest of duck eggs at my front door. I also have a dog (cockapoo) that has seen the eggs and just sniffs them but I am afraid he will harm the ducklings after they hatch. Can I move the eggs?
Thanks for your help,

A: Dogs vary quite a bit so I haven't a feeling for whether your dog will actually be at all interested in the ducklings or not. However, once the eggs hatch, the female will soon take her brood to the nearest waterway so she shouldn't be at the door long after hatching. Mallard incubation takes 26-30 days with 28 being typical. Be sure to note when her incubation began, not when she began laying eggs, to determine when you can expect the hatch. If I were you, I'd simply keep my dog away at that critical period and once she leaves, you're back to normal. Hope this helps and trust you'll be a "momma" soon.
