Eel-like creature found in the Charles River

Q: Is this an eel, or something else? We found it on Earth Day at the Charles River Cleanup in Watertown, MA. Thanks for your help! You're terrific! Carole

A: Good photos. The animal in question is a young American Eel (Anguilla rostrata)- they get up to 4' long! Eels are very interesting fish that spawn in the sea but spend most of their adult lives in freshwater. Great that you were able to see this animal - I've never seen a wild one in my life.
