Hang On Baby

Q: I live in Southern California. I was in the garden digging in the dirt and found 2 sections of little bird like eggs, pink in color, soft, under the dirt. What kind of crider do these eggs belong to? We have been in our house for over 6 years and have never sighted a snake. We have lots of lizards, quail, doves....I did find a very thin snake skin in the area near the dirt pile.
Thank you
Karen
A: Sounds very much like lizard eggs to me. Could be a snake but much more likely to be a lizard. Bird eggs have a hard shell but the reptiles have eggs covered in a leathery covering that is quite pliable. My guess is that the snake skin just happened to be there and has no connection to the eggs.
