Mallard Ducks in my pool

Posted by Amy Ficke on April 10, 2007

Q: I have had the same pair of Mallards nest in the stream behind my house for about 10 years. They have always used my pool as a 'landing pod', but this year, seem to have taken up residence in my pool (winter cover is still on). This year I've seen a 2nd pair in the stream. Could this be why they are staying primarily in my pool, or could there be a predator I haven't seen? I enjoy seeing Mr. and Mrs Mallard every year, but obviously they cannot live in my pool. How can I get them to go back to the stream?

State: Connecticut

A: Dear Amy, A couple of things may be going on here. Mallard pairs in close proximity will seek nesting territory separation so the pool may have been staked out by one of the pairs. Try to discourage the pool pair by removing the standing water on top of the pool cover (I presume this is what you're describing) and/or irritating them with noise, streamers, owl balloons etc.

I doubt if predator fear is what's causing them to desire the pool location. If they are that uncomfortable they would have vacated the area. I hope this helps. Good luck! Jim Berry
