Urban Environment

Q: I was completing the "Open Sesame" unit for a grad class I am in and I live in an apartment complex. I was wondering if you had any ideas in terms of better ways to attract birds to my viewing areas (outside my windows) in such a setting. Though there is some grass and a few sporadic trees, there are mostly concrete sidewalks and the buildings themselves. Any ideas? Thanks a lot!

A: Jonathan: For apartment living it's often desirable to use the type of feeder that mounts directly to a window. They usually are attached with suction cups, but other designs are available. If you're on a ground floor and have yard space, purchase a pole with a hanging "tube" feeder or mount it to a post if you have a deck. The biggest threat are cats so be alert to what's going on at your feeder. Generally I recommend using black-oil sunflower seed, but check with a local nature center or "Wild Birds Unlimited" franchise in your area for more feeding tips. Good luck!
