Baby Snake
Posted by Jason Johnson on December 14, 2006
Q: My daughter found a baby snake about 6-8 inches long in our yard in December. It had a black head and a grayish body. The underside was light cream/white. Can you help me identify the type of snake this is?

A: Thanks for the photo but it is still difficult to get a good idea of what you have. From what I can tell, it looks very much like a Midland Brown Snake (Storeria dekayi wrightorum)to me. This is a subspecies of the Northern Brown Snake and is the most widespread Brown Snake in Georgia.
If I've identified this correctly, you have a totally harmless snake and probably almost an adult too (9-13"at adulthood). Since it is approaching winter, it would be best if you released your snake so it can overwinter naturally (snakes can be very difficult to care for during winter).
You may want to google this animal and confirm my ID. Thanks for asking and I hope this helps.
