agriculture vs. Biodiversity

Posted by Thomas Woelfel on November 25, 2006

Q: I read a quote from the Rainforest Alliance it goes like this ... "Agriculture is the leading cause of ecosystem destruction and species loss worldwide. It occupies more land and uses more fresh water than any other human activity in the world. "...

Is this a valid statement, I wonder? It does seem plausable but is it really the leading cause? I never thought of it that way before. Your thoughts.

Thanks Tom

A: I haven't read this before but once I began thinking about it, it made sense to me. Agriculture is certainly widespread enough and uses much/most of the land of the inhabited world so it makes sense that it would have the greatest effect on ecosystems and therefore species. I think they're correct! Thanks for sharing.
