Q: How many types of pine trees are there in North America?

State: Georgia

A: Good question and one I haven't ever checked out for myself - thanks for asking. I've checked out several references on trees and have numbers from 31 to 35 different native species of pines in the U.S. and Canada. As scientists learn more about some of these species, they may lump two together as one species or split one into two species, so over time the actual number of species can change. When I looked at just Georgia pines, I came up with 10 different native species, not counting introduced pines. Sorry I can't give you the definitive answer on species of pines in North America but somewhere in the low 30's should be about right - at least for now!
