Snake identification

Q: I have several snakes in my yard that I have not been able to find out what they are. They are young snakes and 12 inches in length. The are dark in color (black or dark green) and have yellow stripes running from side to side along their body. When you look down at them on the heads it looks like you have 2 eyes looking up at you. Can you possible tell me what type of snake these are? I live in a heavily wooded area with water around.
State: Maryland
Habitat: forest/open woods
A: From your description, it sounds like you've been seeing Eastern Garter Snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis). You can check these out on the web but keep in mind that their colors vary a lot so one photo doesn't cover them all. This is a harmless snake but it will certainly bite in self-defense. Adults are from 18-26" in length so you probably saw some young animals. With cold weather on its way, these snakes are soon going to be hibernating and you won't see them until spring. If you have a yard or garden, they'll be very helpful in keeping creepy crawlie numbers down. Thanks for writing.
