orange frog

Q: I was out in my backyard picking blackberries when I noticed an orange colored frog. It had some kind of black markings on it's back. It was medium to large in size compared to most frogs I have seen(4 inches or so long). Can you tell me what kind of frog? Is it rare?
State: New Hampshire
Habitat: suburban/yard
A: I'm quite sure you saw a Wood Frog (Rana sylvatica). This is one of our most beaufiful frogs and also the earliest one that breeds in the spring. Wood Frogs have a dark mask on their face that helps with their identification. They're found in moist woods and since their colors blend in with the leaves on the ground, they're often overlooked. Google this animal to get some pictures of what you saw. Thanks for asking.
