Q: I saw a groundhog in the field next to my house. When I walked out to try getting close he ran away. What can I do?
State: New York
A: Many animals have learned, the hard way, that humans are dangerous. So....whenever they see humans, they are very likely to leave immediately. If you followed my guidelines about getting closer to wild animals, it will probably take several times of showing "no interest" before the Groundhog begins to feel safer and allows you to approach more closely. Keep in mind, that this isn't a sure way of getting close. When animals learn over time that something is dangerous, they avoid that danger. Seeing you repeatedly should work but it will take time before the Groundhog relaxes enough for you to get a little closer. Don't give up!
