Q: i saw a little grey snake about 6 inches long on my step, should i be worried about it?

Habitat: suburban/yard

State: West Virginia

A: If it was plain gray, no you should not be worried. The poisonous snakes of West Virginia are all strongly pattered. I can't give you a positive ID without a full description, but one common gray snake is the Ringneck Snake. Ringnecks are small (15"), entirely harmless invertebrate-eating snakes found throughout the eastern US. Ringneck snakes typically have dark gray to black backs, dark heads, yellow to red bellies (often darker red toward the tail), sometimes with black spots on the belly and a pale yellow or cream ring around the neck.

Hope this helps.
