Funnel web black spider

Q: What type of spider builds a funnel web on brick or under decks?

Habitat: suburban/yard

State: Indiana

Habitat: suburban/yard

A: Sounds like you have one of the Funnelweb Spiders (family Dipluridae). These spiders can be fun to watch as they run out on the web to grab prey. Try catching small insects and drop them onto the web to watch the action. These webs are often not sticky at all but the spider feels the vibrations of the prey when it walks or falls onto the web and then runs out, grabs the prey and bites it. You have nothing to fear from this spider so I hope you don't feel a need to remove its web. Thanks for asking.
