frog in bird house

Q: I have a frog living in a bird house. The bird house is about twenty feet up in an Oak tree. The frog has been there for over a month now. Sometimes we don't see him, but every day for hours he is at the opening of the bird house. I was wondering what kind of frog it is and what he could be eating, and do you think he is stuck in the house?

A: You have a Gray Tree Frog (Hyla versicolor) in your birdhouse. There is a second look-alike species but they're very difficult to tell apart so I've just given yo the one species name. This little tree frog is totally harmless and feeds on insects in that tree and others. These frogs are active at night so your little guy is resting in the house during the day. What a cutie! In the evening, especially on a warm moist night, you may even hear it or a nearby one trilling. Thanks so much for sharing.
