Q: i caught some crayfish in a nearby stream, and they are pretty small. where should i keep them and what should i feed them? they are roughly half an inch long and they weren't near any bigger crayfish, do they need their mother?

A: Your crayfish no longer need their mother - they're on their own now. I'd place them in an aquarium with an assortment of rocks in the bottom for hiding places. Young crayfish eat a variety of both plant and animal material while adults are more vegetarians. I'd recommend using goldfish pellets (the kind that sink) as they have a nice mix of material in them. Be sure not to overfeed (your young should clean these up rather quickly - say, within hours). To ensure that you don't overfeed, try feeding them in just one area of the tank where there is some sand or fine gravel so you can monitor their food. If it remains too long, scoop it out. Enjoy!
