Q: Are there different species of freshwater clams that you shouldent eat or are any of them poisonous to eat? Its just that I live on a tidal freshwater marsh/river/inland bay that was extreemely pouluted back in the mid 1900's and still has a lot of pcb's and mercury in it.
Habitat: stream/river
State: Maine
Habitat: stream/river
A: I've tried eating freshwater clams in the past and was very disappointed - they tasted awful! There are many different species across the continent so maybe some are tasty but none is poisonous. However, since they are filter feeders, if they live in polluted waters, as you describe, I would definitely NOT eat them at all. Hope this helps.
