Preserving Caterpillers

Posted by Paul Halley on August 3, 2006

Q: What is the best way to preserve a caterpiller. I found a big caterpiller that had died trying to cross a hot road. I would like to preserve it. It is about as big as a thumb and has five white spots (about 4mm in diameter) on each side. It is a light brown and has a spot about 3mm in diameter on its tail.

A: Please contact the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton. Their phone number is (609) 292-6464 and ask for their curator of invertrebrate zoology. They have an insect collection there and must have preserved specimens like you are interested in making. Good luck!
