kitchen compost container

Q: I have a copper compost can that I purchased for my kitchen scraps. I keep it on the counter beside the sink. I have noticed that I am having a lot of fruit flie and regular house flies...they're laying eggs in the compost container! I know they're good to help compost but I don't want them in my kitchen! How can I keep them out of the kitchen container??

A: Nice to hear you're composting your kitchen waste - much better than putting in the trash. I too have problems with fruit flies. One big problem is that they can get right through screens so if they smell fruit or other material that's edible, they'll come in your house and lay eggs. My best solution is to have a container with a lid that can be kept closed most of the time. You'll still get some flies but not as many. Hope this helps. Thanks for asking.
