Getting Ready

Q: Can birds fly when it rains?
A: Birds can fly just fine in rain, Jimmy. In migration, however, they prefer to fly when it's clear and the winds help to push them along. If it's stormy, birds may roost in trees or on the ground until there are better flying conditions.
Keep in mind that birds that fly out over large bodies of water, like the ocean or Great Lakes, may have to buck bad weather if they fly into a storm once underway. Migration is a very hazardous time for birds.
