Q: I found a spider up here in north idaho, i just moved up here and

have never seen any thing like it. It's a very light tan almost white and

also has two horns on the upper back, and I am not sure if it may be

dangerous.

A: There are so many different kinds of spiders in all kinds of colors, patterns, and shapes, that it's really difficult to ID one without a good photo. However, from what you've shared, it does sound like one of the Micrathena spiders. These spiders have a spiny, hard, glossy abdomen and although especially common in the tropics, are found in temperatre North America too. Try googling this family and see what you get. A really good beginners guide to spiders is the Golden Guide to Spiders and Their Kin. This paperback book has lots of good illustrations and a bit of basic info on different groups. You should be able to find in library or on a bookstore shelf or you can order on line from the Peterson Institute. Best of luck with your spider ID.
