tiny toads?

Q: I recently moved to manhattan kansas,northeastern part of the state and in my yard i have alot of very very small what looks like toads. the smallest one being no more than 1/2 inch big.what exactly are these toads and are they tadpoles when born? and if so,how do they get 1/4 to 1/2 mile away from nearest water

A: Toads leave the tadpole stage while they're still quite small and what you've been seeing is most likely toads, just as you've thought. Toads do lay their eggs in water so there must be a small pond or body of water nearby where they've hatched - I rather doubt they've traveled as much as a 1/4mile from where they hatched however. Those species you're likely to have in Manhattan include the American Toad, Woodhouse's Toad, and Great Plains Toad. Enjoy.
