Question about North Bay, ON

Q: Hi, I was wondering if you could tell me what kind of snakes are in North Bay, Ontario, and where I might be able to see them? Thanks.

State: Ontario

A: It's interesting to note that the farther north one travels, the fewer the different kinds of reptiles you'll find. So, in the southern U.S. there are many different species but in the northern tier of states there are many fewer. And then as one moves northward into Canada, there are even fewer. But, you do have some snake species.

Those that you do have In the North Bay area are the Northern Water Snake, Brown Snake, Redbelly Snake, Garter Snake, Eastern Hognose Snake, Northern Ringneck Snake, Smooth Green Snake, Eastern Milk Snake, and maybe even a Massasauga Rattlesnake. Each one of these snakes has its own preferred habitat so I can't provide places for you to look for these. However, if you get a field guide to reptiles, you should be able to find out much more about each of these species and where it would be best to look for them. The Peterson Institute has some field guides that you can purchase on line or maybe your library will have what you need. Good luck and have fun. Thanks for asking.
