Snake Identification Needed
Posted by John Patuto on July 7, 2006
Q: I recently came across a rather large snake outside of my house in Western New Jersey.
This is the largest snake I've ever encountered and the fact that it curled up - and them jumped towards me has me concerned it may be dangerous.
I took a picture of the snake - see: www.cygnus-x1.net
Can someone advise what species this is and if it is dangerous in any way? Thanks...
State: New Jersey
Habitat: suburban/yard
A: Your snake is a harmless Garter Snake - definitely NOT dangerous. Any time a snake feels threatened, it will strike out to defend itself. I realize this may look aggressive but this really is their only means of defense except for fleeing. Nice picture of the snake and very helpful for making an ID. Garter Snakes are always good to have around your home as they'll feed on various creepy crawlies in garden and yard. Hope this helps.
