identification of a bird

Q: can u identify a bird for me? it is less than a foot tall has a red triangle on the back of its neck and a black trinagle on its best

State: New Jersey

A: Christen, You have a Northern Flicker "Colaptes auratus." Your description of a "red triangle on the back of its neck" gives it away. The flicker also has a black patch across its breast (I presume this is what you mean by "a black trinagle on its best"). The flicker is a common woodpecker species. Thanks for the question.
