Q: My daughter and I found a group of 6 oblong, leatherlike eggs. They were grouped together in a narrow hole above the ground. One of the eggs have a rip place in them. You can look inside of it and see a yellow something.Three of the eggs have not hatched. Being a teacher I would like to possibly indentify the animal.By the way we live in the upstate of South Carolina. Any advice would be appreciated.Renee

A: Thanks for the photos. These are reptile eggs but I can't be sure what kind. The "yellow something" you saw is probably egg yolk and if you were able to look very closely, you might even have seen an embryo. My initial guess is that these are turtle eggs although they may be lizard eggs too. Do you have a small pond or creek fairly near that turtles live in? Now that your eggs are out of the ground, I'd go online to see if you can find some info on how to "incubate" these eggs and maybe you'll be able to see the babies hatch. Try looking for incubation of turtle eggs and I think if they turn out to be lizards, the same info will apply. Best of luck to you.
