Q: Why are they different Colors
Habitat: stream/river
State: Alberta
Habitat: stream/river
A: Your question is an interesting one but one that I don't think anyone can answer very well. Some of the colors may help crayfish blend in to their surroundings - the crayfish in my area do blend in with the rocky stream bottom. I realize that some crayfish can be rather colorful and maybe this helps these animals recognize each other. Guess the best we can say is that whatever colors they are, it either helps them in some way or is neutral (doesn't help or hurt). Sorry I can't provide a better answer but thanks for asking.
