mouse-like creature

Q: My cat brought in a new critter. It looks like a mouse but is about 5 inches long and the tail had hair. We live in N. Wyoming. Any ideas what it could be?

A: Many of the rodents have "some" hair on their tails but one, the Bushy-tailed Woodrat (Neotoma cinerea) has a very hairy tail. Sounds to me that this is the animal your cat found. Check it out on the internet and see if my ID is correct. Thanks for providing your location too, that's always crucial for making identifications. Thanks for asking.
